Myth: fluorescent lights cause cancer! Not true. Fact: They save energy!
Someone is spreading the myth that fluorescent light bulbs cause cancer! They don't. There is another myth, fluorescent lights contain mercury. They don't. A fluorescent light bulb is filled with an inert gas. The positive side of the electrical wire connects to one side of the tube, and the negative to the other side. Electrical energy flows through the tube, through the inert gas, and bounces off the coating on the glass. The coating on the glass lights up, or fluoresces, hence the name.
Actually, florescent light bulbs are highly energy-efficient. They use more logical power to turn on them to leave on all day. Turning fluorescent lights on and off uses tons of energy. Turning it on, leaving it on for hour, and then turning it off... once... saves energy. Replacing light bulbs with fluorescent lights can save you a top money. Sure, the bulbs are more expensive, perhaps twice as much as a regular lightbulb. But, they last up to 15 times longer and use a fraction of the energy. You will save the cost of the fluorescent bulb your first month.
Thees fluorescent light bulbs actually fits in a regular light bulb socket:
