Beware of Snake Oil Salesmen
In my very caveat titled above, I must explore my own heart and mind. Am I a snake oil salesman? After all, here I am writing a "research" blog which is ultimately a means in which I earn money. Am I a snake oil salesman? I hope not. I endeavor not to be one. My internal compass tells me that if I speak honestly, and what I write is truly helpful and not a disguised form of manipulation or harm, I am walking the straight and narrow. With this rambling thought, I now give to you what I believe are the things you should never do, else you may be the victim of a snake oil salesman.
1. Never spend any money on anything being sold via an infomercial or group meeting. Good products and services sell themselves. Bad products are sold based on the antics of over enthusiastic, "motivational" salespeople. The more it looks like religion, the more likely you are getting ripped off. Beware the salesman with gleaming white teeth, over enthusiasm, and a perfect used car salesman hairdo. Never spend money on anything fueled by emotion or enthusiasm, or anything connected by what appears to be a tent revival.
2. Never spend money to make money, unless you are making a true capital investment. Yes, it is fine to buy stock in an established publicly listed company, or to invest in an established franchise where you have security in things like tangilbe equipment. Just don't spend any money on a pyramid scheme or something too good to be true. A lot of snake oil salesmen out there will try to convince you you have to spend money to make money, but at the same time they don't have any of their own money to spend. Why? Because they are not successful at anything but taking your money and spending it on themselves. They want you to finance their lifestyles, not make you money.
3. Never buy anything from anyone selling you a how to get rich scheme based on their claims they have gotten rich doing it. For intance, if someone gets rich buying and selling real estate, why do they need to sell you a program on how to get rich buying and selling real estate? They should have enough money or be making enough money selling real estate. Why do they need to sell you a scheme if they are so successful in the realm of real property transactions?
